Tips on getting online tickets (without any hacking)
- You CANNOT BE LATE when you go online to buy the tickets. I was late for A FEW MINUTES when trying to buy tickets in 2023 and in the end, could get any tickets, because my online queue number was too big.
- Online tickets are sold the month before on the 10th EXACTLY AT 10am (Japan time, Not your own time zone.)
- From my experience on 10th May 2024, you can join the online queue earlier before 10am. (You just queue online, tickets would start selling only exactly at 10am.)
- So, try to join the online queue before 10am. I think the online queue starts at 945am(Japan time). I joined the queue at about 955am(Japan time) on 10th May 2024. (I was already a few thousand in the queue.) So, try to get in earlier.
- When the tickets start selling, you just have to wait for your turn.
- When your turn start, do note that tickets are changing available/selling fast/sold out ALL THE TIME. You can see this when you refresh the screen. Meaning, tickets for a certain date and time which are shown as sold out would be available shortly later, then changed to selling fast shortly later. I suspect that it is because people have problems getting to the end stage of purchasing the tickets, so, the system first blocks off the tickets then release them when purchase was not completed.
- After my trial and error, MY MAIN TIP IS NOT TO CLICK BACK. Whenever there is an error when booking, the system would show a page that asks you to “Go back” and try again. DO NOT DO THAT. JUST KEEP REFRESHING.
- There are many stages of purchasing the tickets. At every stage, if there is an error, just refresh. Do not click back.
- If you do click back, you would have to restart the whole process again. My thought is that the error message is because tickets are being blocked off because someone is purchasing it, but due to the many users buying at the same time, the purchasing process is not completed, and the tickets are released again. So, by refreshing, you are reasserting your choice of tickets at a later stage in the purchasing procedure instead of starting at the beginning again.
- Of course, you must first be able to click a date and time that has available tickets for you to start the process of purchasing. But, even after my own trial and error, if you click on a certain date and time repeatedly, that is not really “Sold Out” (even though it shows “Sold Out”), you might still get tickets for that date and time.
- Another tip, choose dates and timings that are not popular. Like choosing a weekday and a timing that is not that early. The earlier time slots are more popular.
- Hope the above helps.

My background and Ghibli Museum
I am a big fan of Studio Ghibli films. I have seen almost all of Studio Ghibli films, except the latest one, “The Boy and the Heron”.
When I first started coming to Tokyo for holidays, one of the first places to visit was the Ghibli Museum at Mitaka. At that time, tickets were bought from a Lawson Store in Japan. You are unable to buy tickets at Ghibli Museum directly, you have to buy tickets beforehand for entry. Date and timing are fixed for the tickets, you would not be allowed in if your date and/or time was not correct. (You cannot enter if you come too early or too late even if your date is correct.)
On my first trip, I was able to get tickets at Lawson for later in the same week, or a few days later.
On subsequent trips, I could only get tickets for the next week at Lawson.
After which, online tickets were sold and I could get tickets easily for my Japan holidays.
But after that, I think more and more people worldwide became aware of Studio Ghibli, thus, online tickets were quite difficult to get. (Especially since “The Boy and the Heron” won numerous awards.) However, I was able to get a ticket recently for my current trip to Japan. So, I thought I would share how I think I got my ticket with any hacking.
Including this recent trip to Ghibli Museum, I have been there at least 3 times, I think this recent trip should be my 4th or 5th. I lost count.
