I did not plan to write a post on this but I had so much fun and enjoyed the cheap and good sushi that I decided to write something about it.
I saw this video recently: $1 vs $133 Sushi, Japan on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUm8TSGtenI
That’s how I knew about Kura Sushi, and being the budget traveler who is game for some adventure and fun, I decided to try Kura Sushi.
I went to the Kura Sushi branch at Minami-senju, near where I am staying.
First off, the main con of Kura Sushi, everything is in Japanese, there is no English instructions anywhere. Wondering if this is the case at every Kura Sushi branch, because Minami-senju is not in the tourist areas. I had to get by with my reading of Chinese characters and the simple English that the staff could speak.

There is a queue at 11:45am?!?!? I spent a good full minute at the screen figuring out how to get the queue number. After getting the queue number, and realising that they are calling out the numbers only in Japanese, I felt lucky that I had the simple number of 9, and I know what 9 sounds like in Japanese. I saw other people getting numbers like 183. So, had to listen attentively to the simple number of 9.
Heard my lucky number, 9. Was asked to find my table 24. Surprised to see that I was given a big table for 4 even though I came solo.
First, I had to search around for things. There were no saucers for the sauce and wasabi. The cups were above the counters, which took me sometime to find, but all was good, as there was matcha powder to make green tea.
I was given an English translation of the sushi served. Tried searching for the names of the sushi at the start, but was too busy looking out and getting the sushi that looks appealing.
The conveyor belt.
Nice, grated wasabi.
One of the main reason why I wanted to try this place out is because of the game you can play with every 5 plates of sushi. So, I targeted to eat in multiples of 5 plates. I ate 11 plates in the end, because the cheese salmon was really good and I wasn’t sure the odd red plate works for the game as well.
Special mention: Tuna belly. Good.
What’s this? I don’t know but there is egg in it and I love eggs. Take it. Yummy. Still not sure what sashimi is inside.
Is that beef? Tastes like it, but couldn’t verify it as I cannot find it in the list provided.
Now, time for the fun. This is where you slot the plates.
I took a video of the 2 games that I played with my 10 plates, but am unable to upload the videos here since I am using a free account with wordpress. After slotting the 5 plates, look at the screen above your table. There would be an animation of a “game” to determine whether you won or lost. Go and experience the fun yourself. I won on the first game. The prize is above the screen. That was quite fun.
My bill.
My prize. Fun.
